GDG Cloud Sydney: May Meetup 2023

Details
GDG Cloud Sydney is back for a technical meetup this May on Google Cloud Functions and Tips, led by Software Engineers and Google Developer Experts, Prasiddha Bista and Geshan Manandhar.
Join us for two exciting talks on Google Cloud with a focus on community:
"Using Google Cloud Functions to build a build a serverless Slack bot for fun and no profit"
In this talk, Prasiddha Bista will explore the process of building a serverless Slack bot using Google Cloud Functions (Gen1). You will learn about the technologies used, including Terraform as the "infrastructure as code" tool, JavaScript/TypeScript as the programming language, and Google Cloud Functions as the serverless computing platform. There will be a demo showcasing how the bot can welcome new Slack users and react to Slack posts with emojis.
The speaker will then peel the layers of using Google Cloud Functions Generation 2, its integration with Cloud Run, challenges with logging, and IAM permissions required by these services. Additionally, you will learn how to use Github’s OpenID Connect (OIDC) provider between Github Actions and Google Cloud Workload Identity Federation to automate Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Delivery (CD) pipelines.
Whether you're a seasoned developer looking to improve your skills or a beginner just starting out, this session is for you.
"Free GCP credits + a side project (ATJ) = 10+ first full-time tech jobs"
In this talk, you will learn about a community that helped 10+ people land their first full-time tech jobs in 3 years using a side project as leverage. The tale starts when Geshan Manandhar became a Google Developer Export (GDE) for Google Cloud Platform (GCP) at the end of 2019. Geshan used the first batch of free Google Cloud Platform (GCP) - $500 to start a side project called AU Tech Jobs. The free credit was used to host the project on GCP using Google Cloud Run, Google Cloud Build, and other services like Cloud logging and cloud trace.
Leading the project, Geshan practiced what he preached. He helped lead a side project (read mini start-up) that had ChatOps, Continuous Delivery, Microservices, and Serverless containers on Google Cloud Run. The community of mostly international students developed and delivered a running project. Adding the experience gained from the project in their CV as local experience, many of the international students landed their first full-time tech jobs that were not only rewarding but life-changing too.
The talk emphasises the importance of community over technology, but also how technology can enable helpful and transformative communities. Come and enjoy this heartening real-life story.
