Modern applications are built with structures that are different than the old monolithic applications, and the new applications often times are deployed to containers in the cloud. Those containers ideally are orchestrated in a way that allows for efficiently scaling up and down based on traffic.

Having skills in containerizing and orchestrating modern applications is valuable, and the skills are going to be more necessary as time goes on and more applications are built in a containerized way.

To build the containers in this event we'll use Docker, and to orchestrate them we'll use Kubernetes Engine

Have you ever pushed a container to a container registry, or scaled up a containerized application? If not, you get to try something new.

At this event you will get to practice working with Docker and Kubernetes Engine in Google Cloud.

This week's hands-on labs:

Introduction to Docker

In this lab you will familiarize yourself with the basic Docker container environment commands. You will create, run, and debug containers, and learn to pull and push images to and from Google Container Registry.

Kubernetes Engine: Qwik Start

Google Kubernetes Engine provides a managed environment for deploying, managing, and scaling your containerized applications using Google infrastructure. This hands-on lab shows you how deploy a containerized application with Kubernetes Engine. Watch the short video Manage Containerized Apps with Kubernetes Engine.

You'll work through Google Cloud labs to get hands-on experience and when you complete each whole quest, you earn a badge for your LinkedIn!

With the help of great volunteers, Jeff Williams (Google Tech Lead - UC Berkeley) and Elaine Chan (CS - Western Michigan University) lead the group through weekly events using Qwiklabs to help you learn more about Cloud Computing and running your projects on Google servers in the cloud.

Invite a friend who could benefit, and we'll be happy to help them also get access to qwiklabs.com and to help them get started

Don't miss out on the fun on Wednesdays as we learn cloud computing skills, one week at a time, with a goal of helping you level up!
