Date 19th Sept
Place The Fitzgerald (lovely 20s themed speakeasy just round the corner from Fanboy)
As most of you know, Geeklite meetups are 99.9% free (and I cover the subscription costs for the site - bc I'm a big softie with the financial sense god gave pistachio nuts), however..
- THIS GOT SO BIG WE HAD TO HIRE A VENUE, SO I'M CHARGING THE MINIMUM I CAN TO COVER FEES - £3.50 (+pennies in paypal fee) - PLEASE USE YOUR MEETUP NAME AS A REFERENCE ON THE PAYMENT
- If you don't pay in advance, the charge will be £7 on the door
During the event we will cover
- Creating a character - you will have filled out a character sheet (provided) by the end of the talk and have a character ready to start!
- Rules 101 - a basic guide to how the game mechanics work [DND is vast so we won't cover all spells etc bc this is a 2-hour talk not a 3 day residential]
- How your DM can help you and how you can help your DM - what you need to know to start playing
- How DMs handle difficult topics and triggers
- Differences between DND editions and what kit you need
- The World of DND - What's a One Shot vs Campaign - what kind of games are played
- DND media to check out - good YouTube channels, podcasts, games and other goodies to watch
- Generally, what makes a great campaign and great bunch of players
- Q&A with the DM
We can add to this as per suggestions given in the comments below
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A few nights ago, my actor partner, returning from a show, invited in his fellow castmate to finish watching the football and have a few beers. I then found out that said castmate ALSO WORKS AS A PROFESSIONAL DUNGEON MASTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(my partner then regretted his decision as we talked about nothing but DND for the next 90 minutes 😂)
This isn't an event as yet - it's a discussion space. I suggested to DM that we could run an introduction to DND session (perhaps either online or at Fan Boy Three) for Geekliters and he was more than game (pun intended)
SO I'm gauging interest before I set this up. Is there an appetite for this?
We loosely discussed some topics beyond the obvious game mechanics such as DND media to watch (eg., Critical Role) and how consent works in DND (to avoid triggers) - How the Master works with the players and how to be a good and helpful player
Obviously we could then set up some one-shots - Needless to say, the DM is a professional actor and this will be A LOT OF FUN!!
Let me know your thoughts in the comments xxx G
