Jobeda is unable to host this event for the foreseeable future, so please volunteer as host if you can. If there is no-one available to host we will cancel the event 5 days before the event, but you can of course join the Baker Street Astronomers even if Geek Chic won't be present.

The Baker Street Irregular Astronomers (BSIA) meet every month in central London to look at the sky and socialise. Everyone is welcome at all of BSIA's free events. Never used a telescope? Want to stargaze on a casual basis? Just want to meet likeminded astronomy enthusiasts for a chat? No problem! The BSIA is committed to social star parties, where enthusiasts of all levels can mingle. We welcome families and individuals, other astronomical groups, and the press to join us in the ideal Central London location. There's no need to bring equipment, as there's plenty to share, and you needn't worry if you've never experienced astronomy before. We'll be on hand to welcome you and help you get started.

Just some placeholder stuff

If you have friends or family that have never seen Saturn – bring them along! This is the perfect time to take a look, and I’ve yet to meet anyone who didn’t yelp with delight at their first view of the ringworld.

Moving out of the solar system, we’ll be looking at the brighter of the spring deep sky objects: galaxies in Ursa Major and globular clusters in Hercules and Serpens will be high on our list of targets. But we also get a glimpse of the wonderful summer objects that are slowly coming our way: the double binary star Epsilon Lyrae and the glowing atmosphere of a dead star, the Ring Nebula (pictured), and the welcome return of the beautiful gold & azure blue binary star Albireo.

Although you’re welcome to bring any equipment you like, don’t worry if you don’t have a scope of your own, everyone is welcome from advanced to absolute novice – there will be plenty of scopes around on the night and people will be more than happy to find objects for you to observe if you ask. And if you are new to astronomy – there are no silly questions, just ask away!

Although it’s felt a little like summer recently, please do bring along warm layers or coats to ward off the chill as it gets dark. And to help out, there will be warm drinks and snacks available from the café until around 10pm to stave off any cold breezes.

All of the park’s gates will be open for you to reach The Hub until 9.30pm, after that only Monkey Gate (the one nearest to London Zoo see map), will be open to enter and leave through, and we must insist that you only use this gate and never try to climb over the fences.

We look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday 12th June in Regent’s Park. Bring scopes, binoculars, yourselves and new irregulars; but most of all, bring birthday cheer (and cake)!

On a clear night, there can be over 100 people at this event, so to help us connect with other members of this group, we'll stake out a table inside the Hub, with a Meetup sign.

GETTING THERE

Summary of directions:

Enter the Park through the Monkey Gate, which is at the very north of the park. If you have short legs like me, it's a 20-25 minute walk from either Baker Street or Camden Town stations. So instead, I'd recommend going to Baker Street or Camden Town and catching the 274 bus to London Zoo to save the walking.

Once inside the park, it's only 150 meters or so (3 minutes) to the Hub - please be vigilant when it's dark.
