Set up the Ultimate Home A/V and WiFi Network

Is your home stuck in the 1990s from a technology perspective? Don't worry, we understand. Not only can refreshing your tech be scary, but it can be expensive! So rather than dishing out a bunch of money as a giant experiment, let John P. actually demonstrate real world equipment you can use to add all sorts of performance and functionality to your home!

For example, would you like to add some home automation components such as an app controlled Garage Door opener? Or lights you can turn on with a schedule? Or even implement a digital thermostat that knows when you leave the house and adjusts itself to save you money?

Well, you need a solid network to make these and many other dreams a reality. So we'll be hosting a two part series to teach you exactly what to buy, and how to set it up!

PART 1: Improving Your Physical Network

John P. will demonstrate how to update your home's network capacity for Gigabit Wired and Wireless performance that rivals business applications. The improvements will speed up your home, dramatically improve Internet performance, and give you additional capabilities.

Topics include:

• Routing, Switching, and Power Over Ethernet

• Wireless routers and mesh networking choices

• Implementing Multiple wireless access points for extended coverage

• Cabling, adding jacks, and testing

AFTER THE MEETUP

After the meetup and demonstrations, we'll all likely head out to a local spot for drinks and snacks. So if you have time for socializing please plan accordingly.

PS - The SECOND part of this workshop (https://www.meetup.com/GeekHouseDallas/events/222502766/), which will continue the following week, will deal with setting up a local NAS server to handle the duties of backing up all of the machines in your home, storing all of your important documents, and serving multimedia to any TV or device in the home, or even while on the go!
