The Recurring One-Off Curry Dinner
Details
If the Café Philo waiting list is testing your patience, this is the delicious workaround. No philosophy whatsoever, but lots of curry.
I’ve booked a table at a genuinely excellent Indian restaurant for an easygoing evening of good curry, wide-ranging (potentially nonsensical) conversation, and the kind of philosophical wandering that happens naturally when people are relaxed and well fed. There’s no agenda, no topic, and no expectation to “perform” — just bring your curiosity and your appetite.
A quick word about commitment (said with affection):
This only works if the people who say “yes” actually show up in bodily form. So this isn’t the event for maybes, serial reschedulers, or those who suddenly discover they’re “very tired” an hour beforehand.
If you ghost, you don’t just leave an empty chair — you’ve taken a spot from another curry-loving philosopher. And yes, karma keeps notes.
Moreover, we have a hefty discount with the restaurant so I want to honour their commitment. Technically we each pay for what we order, but in practice we usually split the bill evenly — it keeps things simple and convivial.
If this sounds like your kind of night, you’ll be very welcome. Come as you are, eat well, and see where the conversation takes us 🌶️
