Speaker: Bobby Stuijfzand, Data Scientist
Title: Re-purposing messy data for research: transparent data cleaning with R markdown
In this talk the speaker will share some of my experiences in preparing messy administrative datasets in R, to make them suitable for research purposes. I will give specific attention to how to make the cleaning process as transparent as possible to an audience of domain experts who have no working knowledge of R. This transparency is crucial, as it usually are the domain experts who will be able to tell what is sensible data and what isn’t.
About the speaker: I am an educational scientist and teacher who found out eight years ago he really liked statistics. I completed a PhD at the University of Bristol (UK) on statistical methods for eye tracking data, after which I worked at the University as a data scientist collaborating with researchers from a wide range of academic disciplines. I also set up and ran a data science question and answer service at the University. Currently I am working from Lausanne as a freelance data scientist, collaborating with a number of Universities throughout Europe. I am still passionate about education, and where I can I try to slip in some educational materials in my work.
