LONGNIDDRY TO HADDINGTON ON OLD RAIL PATH

Details
Mary invites you to join her on this pleasant walk along the old railway track from Longniddry rail station to Haddington riverside. When we reach the end of the track we’ll take a short walk down into Haddington town centre where we’ll see St Mary’s Church and the Nungate Bridge before having a well earned refreshment at the Riverside Inn
RAILWAY LINE: (1846-1968) carried passengers and farm produce from the surrounding area to Edinburgh. In return the railway transported horse dung from the streets of Edinburgh to be used on the East Lothian farms! The paths are fairly level and have a firm surface.
POINTS OF INTEREST: Redhouse Castle (15th century tower house) can be seen from the walk.
Hopetoun Monument which was dedicated to John Hope, the 4th Earl of Hopetoun (1765-1823) and built in 1824. It stands on top of Byres Hill from where panoramic views can be seen of the county.
Protestant reformer, John Knox, was born in Haddington in 1505).
HADDINGTON: is often known as ‘the hidden toun’ because of the way it sits in its rural environment. It's a beautiful market town, rich in history and many attractions for us to see.
AGRICULTURE: has long been the basis for Haddington's prosperity and the successful growth of the town shows itself in some excellent architecture, dating from the 17th to 19th centuries, including the William Adam-designed 1748 Town House.
ST MARY'S CHURCH (C14th): is of cathedral proportions and lies in a beautiful riverside setting by the (little) Tyne and near the mediaeval Nungate Bridge.
NUNGATE BRIDGE: Old Nungate Bridge carried a main route into Scotland over the river Tyne. This 12th Century bridge consists of three red sandstone arches and has stood firm against many devastating floods in the last 800 years. The bridge was also the place of execution in the county and the hanging hook, from which criminals were hung, can still be seen in one of the arches. The bridge is now only used by pedestrians.
