Carole invites to meet by 11:50 on Thursday November 6th by commonwealth pool and walk to Portobello and Joppa via Innocent railway. Walk will start at 12 noon.

Please only sign up if you are actually planning to attend the event. If you sign up and circumstances change, please change your RSVP to not going to make space for those who might be on waitlist.

THE INNOCENT RAILWAY

  • The Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway nicknamed “The Innocent Railway” opened in 1831 and was initially horse-drawn as steam engines were considered dangerous!
  • It earned the nickname "the Innocent Railway" due to its safety record - it carried 300 to 400 thousand passengers a year without fatalities in an age where steam engines had a reputation as dangerous.
  • The 517 metre Innocent Railway Tunnel runs under Holyrood Park and was the first railway tunnel in Britain.
  • The railway closed in 1968 but this section re-opened as a path for walkers and cyclists in 1981.
