What we’re about
We are so fortunate to be surrounded by such an amazing landscape here in the Santa Fe area. The deep canyons, dramatic badlands, and winding washouts that lead to who knows where. Slot canyons that inspire thoughts of wildness. Forest trails that guide us to vistas that beg from us a moment of pause.
As with any personal relationship, finding that connectedness to nature requires an intent; a dedicated time of feeling your aliveness, your presence within it. The author John O'Donohue embodies the intent of this group in Walking in Wonder: Eternal Wisdom for a Modern World. He says “Take time to celebrate the quiet miracles that seek no attention.”
How Gentle Walks Work:
1. Members will identify simple, easy walks/hikes around the Santa Fe area
2. We'll meet up at those places for leisure walks, taking plenty of time to stop along the way to note the minutiae of wonders on that path
3. Along that path, we'll find a place to sit down, and have nice meditation; It might be a simple meditation you construct for yourself, or perhaps a guided meditation
Gentle Walks Charter:
- Let's slow down
- Let's connect with this amazing place that we're in right now
- For this moment, let's try to let go of our personas, egos, those things that we spend so much time with in our daily lives
- Let's connect with others interested in mindfulness and nature

See all- Hike at St. Johns in the Arroyo and also up above the water tower.St. John's parking lot., Santa Fe, NM
This will be an easy and familiar walk for many of us. We will meet, park, & start near the entrance to the first parking lot for the public at St John's College. (Please dbl-click the map for better view of the roads and parking.) I say near the entrance because it seems there is a year-old parking policy here. Park ONLY where the slots are painted with, "Visitor Parking Only" at the street end of the lot. We'll walk to east end of lot then along the arroyo up onto a open area with side arroyos with pinon trees, that make for good meditation spots, shaded or in sun per your choice. Views of Sun & Moon.
At that point we can make it a short (1.7 mile) loop and return; or we can take a spur trail up the the Sun/Moon saddle and see nice views there and return along the side of Sun to the water tower and arroyo. That makes it about a 2.7 mile hike. Many of us have done both of these options in previous hikes.Description: Easy hike along the dry arroyo, then dirt tracks up onto an open area w/ pinons, bushes, and perhaps early wildflowers.
