🏞️🌞🌿 Santa Barbara 7 Falls & 3 Pools
Details
Mission Creek is the route. We will head into Mission Canyon and follow Mission Creek upstream, experiencing the canyon largely from within the creek rather than simply following a trail beside it.
Mission Creek flows through a steep canyon lined with riparian woodland and dense forest canopy. The combination of flowing water, shade, rock, cascades, and pools creates a remarkably different environment from the warmer and more exposed landscape outside the canyon. The upper Mission Creek watershed is recognized for relatively undisturbed aquatic habitat, riparian corridors, and dense oak woodland.
Our objective is 7 Falls & 3 Pools, but the destination is only part of the experience.
The creek itself is the journey.
The Experience
We’ll progressively leave the character of an ordinary trail hike behind and immerse ourselves in Mission Creek.
Expect a changing combination of rock hopping, wading, scrambling, and sections of basic canyon-wall climbing, with the creek repeatedly shaping our route.
Sometimes we’ll move along rock beside the water. Sometimes through the water. Sometimes the easiest passage will be to climb around an obstacle and return to the creek above it.
The terrain continually changes as the creek moves through the canyon—quiet stretches of flowing water give way to cascades, pools, boulders, narrow passages, and larger drops.
At 7 Falls and 3 Pools, we’ll have time to slow down and experience the water and canyon rather than simply checking off a destination.
Look around.
Listen to the creek.
Notice how water, rock, vegetation, light, and shadow interact.
With every step upstream, the landscape changes.

Who Will Enjoy This Hike
This outing will be a good fit for hikers who enjoy immersive creek exploring and hands-on movement through natural terrain.
Teammates should be comfortable with rocky and uneven footing, wading, slippery rocks, boulder hopping, scrambling, and basic climbing on canyon walls. The ability to move carefully through changing terrain and make good route decisions is important.
This is not a conventional trail hike, and the creek itself will frequently be our route.
Each participant is responsible for understanding the risks and making sound decisions about their own ability and participation.
Group Culture
This group is for people who enjoy exploring beautiful natural places while cultivating health, fitness, curiosity, and a deeper understanding of the world around us.
I believe every place has a story. Mountains, forests, rivers, coastlines, deserts and canyons are more than scenic destinations—they are landscapes shaped by geology, climate, ecology, evolution and human history.
A beautiful landscape gives us more than something to look at. It gives us something to wonder about.
Our outings provide opportunities to move through diverse landscapes, observe the natural world, exchange ideas and discover the connections that shape each environment. Along the way, we may talk about plants, animals, geology, history, science, travel, or simply whatever catches our attention.
Meaningful experiences come not only from where we go, but from how we experience each place. Curiosity, preparation, collaboration, humility, good judgment and respect for nature and fellow hikers are part of the journey.
If this style of exploring resonates with you, we welcome your interest in joining us.
