October GeoDC: Hot Maps

Details

The October GeoDC meetup will feature hot maps, with the cartographers behind them explaining how they made the maps and the design decisions behind them. We'll start at 7:00 pm, with lightning talks getting underway promptly at 7:30 pm. We'll have some time afterwards for more conversations, but with a deadline. The first presidential debate starts at 9pm, and Stetson's is having a viewing party! Plan to either head out by then or stick around to watch the debates with geo friends and a slew of other Washingtonians.

We'll have these lightning talks:

Rosemary Daley (https://twitter.com/rosemarydaley) will be talking about the evolution of the NG Tiled Basemap and the complications and considerations which arise when taking rich cartographic content to a digital platform. Chris Herwig (https://twitter.com/hrwgc) will show his maps of Mars (http://mapbox.com/blog/2012-08-26-mapping-mars/), and discuss how he made them with open data and open source tools and his design thinking to make the maps tell an "out of this world" story. If you have a hot map to show off, send a message through meetup and we'll try to get you on the lineup this month or at an upcoming meetup.

GeoDC meets once a month on the first Wednesday of the month at 7:00 pm at the upstairs bar at Stetson's. We're a group of people working in cartography, GIS, mapping, geography, data, international development, and other geo-related fields. Join us for some lightning talks, conversations, and beers!

For updates, join the meetup group or follow us on Twitter at @geo_dc (http://twitter.com/geo_dc).
