Sierra Club and New Politics Academy Day at Arabia Mountain
Location not specified yetCome out with the Sierra Club GA Chapter, Sierra Club Military Outdoors (SCMO), and the New Politics Academy for a day exploring some of Metro Atlanta's best-kept secrets. We’ll walk a two-mile stretch along the Mile Rock Trail. Meet us at the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve’s Nature Center on Saturday, March 28th, at 10 a.m. EST. Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area, just east of Atlanta, offers diverse scenery. The park has over thirty miles of trails that wind through mountaintops, lakes, grasslands, and forests. Arabia Mountain is one of our favorite places to hike and run, and this two-mile route is a great way to explore its beautiful outdoor spaces.
The double-trail loop takes you through shady woods, across open granite, and past a calm, glassy lake—all in just two miles. Along the way, you’ll see tall pines, hardwood trees, wildflowers, moss, and lichens. You might even spot Diamorpha smallii, a rare plant that blooms bright red in early spring. The trail is mostly flat, so it’s great for beginners and families. It’s also one of SCMO outings leader Lornett Vestal’s favorite spots in the Atlanta area.
We’ll hike a two-mile, kid-friendly loop at Arabia Mountain near Atlanta, following the Mile Rock and Forest Trails through wide rock fields to a peaceful lake. We’ll also stop at the nature center, and if the group is up for it and the weather is good, we can add another mile and a half to visit the AWARE nature center.
SCMO and New Politics Academy will provide snacks and breakfast for participants. Veterans, active-duty service members, military families, and civilians are all welcome to join us.
Sierra Club’s Military Outdoors (SCMO) ensures military members, veterans, and their families enjoy the beauty of nature by supporting programs and policies that remove barriers to their experiencing the great outdoors.
New Politics Academy (NPA) is a nonpartisan nonprofit that recruits and supports service-minded leaders to continue their impact in civic life. We offer training, coaching, and a national community that helps veterans, AmeriCorps and Peace Corps alums, and other servant leaders step up as values-driven changemakers. Learn more at newpoliticsacademy.org.
Join Sierra Club and New Politics Academy for a Civic Stillness Hike. It’s a calm, nonpartisan space to take a break from the noise, enjoy the outdoors, and connect with others in the community.
