What we’re about
Welcome to the Georgia Chapter of the Sierra Club! You're here because, like over 11,000 of your friends and neighbors, you want a safe and healthy community in which to live, smart energy solutions to combat global warming, and an enduring legacy for America's wild places. Find out how the club can help you explore, enjoy, and protect the planet! This Meetup group announces Sierra Club events, outings and volunteer opportunities across the state to educate and bring us together for fun times while supporting our campaigns. at: SweetwaterCreekHike - Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest & hikes along the Cherohala SkyWayJoyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, Robinsville, NC
**Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest ** is one of the Nation’s most impressive remnants of old-growth forest, with magnificent examples of more than 100 tree species, many over 400-years-old, and some more than 20 feet in circumference and 100 feet tall. For those arriving June 6th, we will (nature willing) go into the forest in the evening to see the synchronized fireflies.
The Cherohala Skyway was completed in 1996 after planning and construction for thirty-four years. It winds up and over 5,400 foot mountains for 18 miles in North Carolina and descends another 23 miles into the deeply forested back country of Tennessee. We will stop to view some highway overlooks and hike Hooper Bald through rare azaleas 1.3 miles round trip to the 5,290 peak and have lunch. If it is open, we will then travel to view thundering Bald River Falls. Afterwards hike Huckleberry Knob only 2.5 mile round trip hike but it is the highest peak in the area at 5,560 feet.
