Achtung Europa!

Details

In addition to his great novels and short stories, Thomas Mann wrote numerous critical texts about the cultural, social and political trends of his time. In Achtung, Europa! he warns his readers about the rise of fascism. Even at an early stage, he recognises with a sharp eye the violent nature of fascism and the danger to democracy and the rule of law. The book was published in 1938, after Mann had emigrated to the USA.
Arnon Grunberg has written the foreword to the Dutch edition, which will be published by De Arbeiderspers on 6 June 2025, the 150th anniversary of Thomas Mann's birth. Trixie Hölsgens from the Duitsland Instituut talks to him about the current relevance of Thomas Mann's essay. The two translators will also be present as guests.
In addition to Achtung Europa!, a graphic novel of Mario and the Magician, illustrated by Flemish artist Koenraad Tinel, will also be published by de Arbeiderspers in June. This story, which is set in an Italian seaside resort, can also be read as a warning against the rise of fascism.
