G-O Hike: Mt Donald McLean Walk and Karamatura Falls

Hello fellow Get-Outsiders! Lets do the Donald McLean Walk and Karamatura Tracks including Karamatura Falls.

IMPORTANT NOTES:-

• Meet Up Time and place: 7.30am at New World New Lynn (on corner of Clark Street and Crown Lynn Place, also a short walk across the road from New Lynn Train Station).

• Difficulty Rating: Moderate - the track is mostly gravel paths and boardwalks. One part of the track includes climbing downhill on a long stretch of stairs for 30 mins which may be hard on the knees for some. The total walk length is approximately 2-3 hours depending on speed of the group.

• Suitability: Suitable for beginners with a reasonable level of fitness.

• Expected timeline for the day:

• 7.30am Meet at New World New Lynn to sort car pooling.
• 7.45am Leave New World to head to Karamatura Carpark.
• 8.30am Drop 1/2 cars at Karamatura Carpark (Huia Road), toilet stop.
• 8.50am Gather at Mt Donald McLean Carpark (end of Mt Donald McLean Road).
• 9am Mt Donald McLean Walk to lookout (30 mins return including photo time)
• 9.30am Start walk to Karamatura via Mt Donald McLean and Karamatura Tracks.
• 10.30-11.00am (approx) Food stop at Karamatura Falls
• 12.15pm Finish walk at Karamatura Carpark with lunch there
• 12.45pm Pick up cars from Mt Donald McLean Carpark
• 1.30pm Back in New Lynn/Auckland

• Transport/Car Pooling: Please answer the required questions to ensure that we have enough cars to get everyone between start and end points, if you say you are bring a car and this changes please contact me ASAP on 021566458 to let me know so that I can adjust the plans.

• Bring: Drinking water, packed lunch, footwear/clothing suitable for walking, a rain jacket, sunhat, sunscreen, a camera to take great photos, and your passion for the outdoors! :)

• Footwear: Comfortable walking footwear with reasonable grip, ideally closed toes, definitely no jandals!

• Drinking Water: Bring your own reasonable size bottle/s please. There is nowhere to refill water bottles along the route so best to bring enough for the whole day.

• Toilets: Public toilets at Karamatura Carpark - this is the end point of the walk and will also be the point where we drop off 1/2 the cars at the start of the day so there will be a chance for a toilet stop if needed.

• RSVP to this event: Please only RSVP Yes to this event if you are genuinely intending on coming. If your circumstances change and you are unable to attend please change RSVP asap to allow other people the chance to attend. Once available spaces are full for the event there is a waiting list option you can join. If you RSVP and don't show up or contact us within 24 hours of the event, it will be treated as a 'No Show'. Repeated (>2) No Shows will be removed from the group.

• Cellphone Coverage: Cell phone coverage is very limited (basically non-existent), please do not rely on cellphone coverage for locating the group after we leave New World.

• Weather: You can check latest weather updates on www.metservice.com. I will also check the weather forecast the day before the hike and update everyone.
