American Dirt, by Janine Cummins is this month’s book.
It’s about a Mexican bookseller who is forced to flee as an undocumented immigrant migrant (oh dear) to the US, along with her son after her journalist husband exposes a local drug kingpin who she has unwittingly befriended.
It’s been a New York Times bestseller, selling over 3,000,000 copies worldwide wide. It has also been criticised by Mexican-American authors as being culturally exploitative .
I’ve changed the date because the original one had me in hospital with people rummaging around my innards and giving me a new emergency hip. Interestingly, though irrelevant to this event, when you get a new joint you also get a certificate for airports to explain why the scanner goes off. Who knew?
