Paddle at Pettigrew State Park

Details
Come paddle at Lake Phelps in Pettigrew State Park. Lake Phelps is the second largest natural lake in NC. It is relatively shallow with an average depth of 4.5 feet. The lake depends on rainfall for water and not underground springs. This is the historical location of Somerset Plantation, which is why the canals were constructed connecting the lake to the Scuppernong River.
This area was also home to the Carolina Algonkian Native Americans. They used the Scuppernong for transportation. In fact, Scuppernong is an Alginkian word, meaning "Land of the Bay Tree". Legend also links Sir Walter Raleigh to this area.
We will paddle around the lake and explore the canals that branch off the lake. We'll plan to paddle 2-3 hours, depending on how long the group wants to stay on the water. Be sure to bring sunscreen, bugspray, plenty of water, and snacks if you want them. As always, we'll ask that you abide by US Coast Guard Regulations when it comes to your PFD, light and whistle!
