This challenging loop in the southern district of Shenandoah National Park isn’t as well-known as some of its neighboring hikes, but it offers a wonderful variety of scenery. There are two magnificent viewpoints, a beautiful mountain stream to explore, fascinating rock formations, and solitude on some of the park’s less traveled trails.

DIFFICULTY: Strenuous

DOGS: Please leave your canine companions at home.

WHERE: Shenandoah National Park - Skyline Drive; Blackrock Gap parking lot - milepost 87.4. Please be at the trail head by 9:30AM.

FEES & PASSES: There is an entrance fee to the Park - $30 per vehicle or $55 for an annual pass, good for anyone in the car (if you are going to enjoy the Park, the annual pass is the way to go and most of these funds stay in the park for improvements). If you already have a Park pass, please bring it.

WHAT TO BRING: Please bring plenty of water and wear hiking boots/shoes. Trekking poles are recommended for this hike. Bring snacks. Also, pay attention to the mountain weather - be prepared with a rain shell.

WEATHER: If inclement weather necessitates canceling or postponing the hike, the decision will be made no later than 7:00AM - cancellations will be posted on the hike comments section. Steady rain with not much chance of clearing and/or dangerous conditions will call for postponing the hike.

RSVP: If you find that you are NOT going to be able to attend the hike, please update your RSVP to “No” as soon as possible. This allows those on the waitlist to have the opportunity to attend.
