Time: 2:00 pm - We will take a few minutes for introductions and Trivia While Trekiing and then begin our walk.
Hike Preparation: Bring water and wear sun protection. This is a fairly flat hike. No hiking poles needed. Though hiking poles are at your discretion based on your preferences and hiking needs. Dogs are welcome! They should be on a short (max 6', non-retractable) leash, well-behaved, and capable of keeping up with the hikers. Bring water for the dog and plan to pick up after them.
History of the area: As early as 1785, mills were established here where a dam stood. On the last day of the brief March 1865 occupation in the Civil War by Union Troops under command of Generals Phil Sheridan and George Armstrong Custer, the mill was inadvertently set afire while soldiers were busily tearing up the railroad tracks. They also burned the Free Bridge over the Rivanna River. Prior to the war, the mill produced uniforms for military schools across the country, including West Point. Despite another fire in 1888, the mill continued in operation until the 1960s. In 2017, the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors approved the rezoning of the Woolen Mills factory property for mixed-use development.
On our way to Riverview Park, we'll pass several houses built for mill employees, the company store that was built in the late 1700s and the historic chapel. (Thanks to Linda Chauvin for this description).
