Happy Pride Month friends! We're celebrating with a hike for LGBTQIA friends and allies this Sunday, June 22nd. We will meet in the parking area at Sugar Hollow at 8:45 AM. See the map locator below.
This hike will follow the North Fork of the Moorman's River to Big Branch. It will be about a 4-mile out-and-back with several stream crossings. You may want to hike in a sturdy pair of sandals or amphibious trail shoes. There are some moderate elevation gains since we are hiking along a river that has experienced significant wash-out events over the years. We will keep the pace chill and fun as our goal is to soak-up our surroundings and enjoy some quality nature-therapy.
Here are some things you will want to have for this hike:
1. Small Daypack - 15-20 Liter capacity.
2. Sunscreen
3. Bug repellent - Deet, Picaridin, or Eucalyptus/Lemon
4. Water bottle or hydration reservoir in pack. (You want to carry at least a liter of water.)
6. Snacks! (Preferably one's that won't melt.)
7. Small first aid kit.
Some optional items to bring:
1. Small packable towel. (To dry your feet or if you decide to swim.)
2. Hat
2. Camera
3. Binoculars
You will want to dress for heat and humidity. Lightweight Nylon/Poly hiking shorts or something like a board short. Moisture-wicking shirt or sun shirt. Think breathable, light, and fast-drying. The forecast is putting the high for the day at 98 degrees with full sun so dress for the conditions and the possibility that you may take a dip in the river to cool off.
This area is a very popular spot for folks who like to hike, swim, trail-run, and fly-fish. We will likely see all of that going on out there during our hike. In addition to seeing humans, this is a great place for birdwatching, wildlife observation, and forest-bathing. Oh yeah, did we mention there are some cool waterfalls?
Please drop any questions you might have in the comments below. Thanks!
