Sugar Hollow (5-ish miles)

Details

I haven't posted this hike since June of 2024. It is perfect for the hot weather. We'll start at 8:00 AM. The hike is lovely and offers six river crossings (3 in each direction). Please arrive on time as Sugar Hollow gets crowded when it's hot. If the parking lot is full, park on the side of the road. The elevation change isn't substantial, but the trail is interesting and rocky in parts. We will stop for a quick snack at a large shale rock formation. Those who wish to climb a bit more and get closer to the waterfall and swimming hole can join me.

A few notes:

  • Your friendly leashed dog is welcome.
  • Bring water (I am bossy about that) and a snack.
  • Wear sunscreen and bug spray.
  • You'll be happy to have hiking poles as the water crossings can be tricky. I walk through the water but still use a pole for balance.
  • Wear shoes/boots that can handle the water. You won't have time to keep changing shoes. You’ll want a change of shoes for the drive home.
  • I limit my wooded trails hikes to 14 people. No weekend guests.
  • If your plans change and you can no longer join us, change your RSVP to allow people on the wait list to attend.

Getting there: I set my GPS for Sugar Hollow Dam and Reservoir (which is on Sugar Hollow Road) then follow Sugar Hollow Road to the end; another 5 minutes past the reservoir. (If you have been to Stinson Vineyards, you need to go another 15 minutes on Sugar Hollow Road.) You will pass a dam and what looks like a construction site on your left. Keep on going! Toward the end of Sugar Hollow Road, you will be on a gravel road. Sugar Hollow Road ends at the parking lot for the hike. Leave yourself extra travel time if you haven't been to Sugar Hollow. I have no cell service there so if you need to reach me, you will be out of luck. If you are late, catch up with us. We will enter the trail to the right (through he gate at the end of the parking lot) and continue toward the left.
