Hike Description: We will start our hike from the Stony Man parking lot heading out south on the AT as it crosses in front of Skyland Lodge and then passes the Skyland Stables. We will continue on the AT passing Pollock Knob and the Timber Hollow Overlook until we reach the Crescent Rock overlook. We will walk through this overlook, crossing Skyline Drive to the Crescent Rock Trail. We will follow Crescent Rock as it joins with the Limberlost trail. We will bear left on Limberlost, passing the Limberlost parking lot and then turning left on the Upper Whiteoak Canyon trail which we will follow to the Skyland Lodge entrance on Skyline Dr. We will walk up the road for a short distance and pick up the AT and follow it back through our starting point to the Stony Man trail. We will do a lariat on the Stony Man trail, returning to the AT and continuing north to the intersection with Passamaquoddy trail. We will follow the Passamaquoddy trail to the Furnace Spring trail where we will turn left and follow it back to our cars.
A little history: The Passamaquoddy Trail gets its name from a Maine Native American word, "Passamaquoddy," meaning "abounding in pollock". George Pollock, who built the trail in 1932, named it after himself, using the Native American term as a playful reference to pollock fish, even though the trail is far from any pollock-rich waters.
