Jones Run, Doyles River Trail - 7 miles (Moderately Strenuous)

Jones Run & Doyle's River Falls

This is one of the most popular waterfall hikes in the southern section of the Shenandoah National Park. There are several falls along Jones Run, plus two large falls on Doyle's River. Our hike will start at Browns Gap parking area and is a circuit hike of approximately 7 miles.

There are two significant waterfalls on the Doyle's River trail. We will ascend on the Jones Run trail, passing a series of beautiful cascades. At the top of Jones Run, we will connect to the AT, heading northward back to parking area at Browns Gap.
A park pass is required to enter Skyline Drive.

TRAIL UPDATE: Be prepared for several stream crossings that will require some challenging rock hopping, the lower stream crossing (hike mid point) will require water shoes/sandals or be prepared to hike in wet shoes/boots... Sections of the trail will be wet, muddy and slippery. The grass may be long on the fire road, so take precautions for ticks. Difficulty: Moderately Strenuous

Note on difficulty: This hike will have 1,400' of elevation gain. This is NOT an easy hike - moderate with a few challenging sections (most challenging are two uphill sections and depending on the water level, the lower stream crossing). Proper footwear and hiking poles for this hike!!!

Where: We will meet at Browns Gap parking area - mile post 83 Skyline Drive - Parks Southern District - 10:00am.

Fees & Such: Don't forget your Park Pass or be prepared to purchase one or pay an entrance fee.

Supplies: please bring plenty of water and wear hiking boots/shoes. Trekking poles are recommended for this hike - they make the water crossings much easier. We will be taking a break where the two rivers meet, so bring lunch and snacks...

Weather: If inclement weather necessitates canceling or postponing the hike, the decision will be made no later than 8:00 a.m. - cancellations will be posted on the hike comment section... Steady rain with not much chance for clearing and/or dangerous conditions will call for postponing the hike.
