Hike: Humpback Rocks and Dobie Mtn with Paul Wolfe Shelter

Hike Description: We are going to start the hike with a steep climb (~800 feet in less than a mile) up to the 360-degree views of Humpback Rock. After enjoying the views at Humpback Rock, we are going to climb up to the intersection of the Appalachian Trail. We will turn left on the Appalachian Trail and hike to the Glass Hollow Overlook where we can see some great views of Rockfish Valley. We will continue on the Appalachian Trail down to the Paul Wolf Shelter where we will have lunch. Along the way, there is an overlook with views of Scott Mountain and Bear Den Mountain in Shenandoah National Park to the north. We will then retrace our steps back up the Appalachian Trail to the Albright Trail junction. We will turn right onto the Albright Trail and climb Dobie Mountain. There is the possibility of seeing the remnants of a plane wreckage along this portion of the trail (Beechcraft that crashed in 1964 and was found a year later). We will continue on the Albright Trail back to the cars at the Humpback Rock Parking Area.

A little history of Humpback Rocks c/o Hiking Project: The prominent rock outcrop was a landmark guiding wagon trains over the Howardsville Turnpike in the 1840s. A portion of the historic trace still exists. This was a major route across the narrow Blue Ridge until railroads came through the mountain gaps.
