Shenandoah River State Park - Blooming of the Bluebells
Details
The blooming of the bluebells is a remarkable site in Shenandoah River State Park. There is a small window of opportunity - typically late March thru early April - for viewing this wildflower extravaganza.
On this day, we will hike several trails within Shenandoah River State Park - most likely encompassing anywhere from 5 to 8 miles in length. The trails we will hike are rated from Easy to Moderate. Here are the names of some of the trails to be traversed on this day: the Bluebell Trail, River Trail, Redtail Ridge Trail, Big Oak Trail, Tulip Poplar Trail. Others may be added to this list.
Along with the blooming wildflowers, we will also come upon several overlooks where we will have nice views of the meandering South Fork of the Shenandoah River.
Our hike will begin and end at the River Bend Discovery Center. And upon finishing our hike, we can have a picnic/tailgate at one of the nearby picnic shelters adjacent to the Discovery Center. So, if you plan to stick around after the hike, please bring a light snack to share with others. You can also bring your choice of a refreshing post-hike beverage.
Please Note: The one-way drive time from Charlottesville to Shenandoah River State Park is approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Yes, it's a long drive, but well worth the journey.
Also, sorry to mention this, but no dogs for this outing.
What To Bring:
>broken-in hiking shoes - maybe another pair of comfortable shoes to change into after the hike
>moisture wicking clothing apparel - not required - but recommended
>1 to 2 liters of water - for hydration purposes along the hiking trail
>snacks/lunch - to have at a tranquil place along one of the hiking trails
>a light snack/food item to share with the assembled group after the hike
>a means for paying for the Shenandoah River State Park admission/parking fee - which is currently $10
Hope you will be able to participate in this outing, for what promises to be a blue sky, sunny day.
