Pen Park/Meadowcreek Golf Course - dog friendly - along the Rivanna River.

Join us for a pleasant hike along the Rivanna River at Pen Park, the pre-Revolution era plantation home of the Gilmer family, with a stop at the graveyard for both the family and enslaved people.

You will get a bit of history, whether you want it or not, about George Gilmer, Revolutionary War physician and son Francis Thornton Gilmer, both close friends of Jefferson and Madison, buried in the family plot. The adjoining cemetery contains the remains of other prominent Charlottesvillians. And just outside those old brick walls, the unmarked graves of indentured servants & enslaved human beings, which were fairly recently discovered.
