Mary's Rock via Jewell Hollow Overlook - 6.1 mi - 1,000 ft Elev Gain
Details
This is a scenic ~6-mile out-and-back hike in the northern section of Shenandoah National Park, following the ridgeline mostly along the Appalachian Trail with about 1,000 feet of elevation gain. Expect expansive valley views along the way and sweeping 270–360° panoramas from Mary’s Rock summit.
The route also passes the Pinnacles—an unusual Pedlar Formation granite outcrop that’s great for exploring and photos. Expect temperatures 8–12°F cooler than Charlottesville and windy conditions at the summit, so bring layers.
Local lore says the peak was named either for Francis Thornton’s wife, Mary, or for their daughter, who reportedly carried bear cubs down from the summit.
