Mary's Rock via Pinnacles Picnic Area - 7.5 mi - 1,200 ft Elev Gain
Details
This is a scenic 7.5-mile retrace hike in the northern section of Shenandoah National Park, following the ridgeline mostly along the Appalachian Trail with about 1,200 feet of elevation gain. Expect expansive valley views along the way and sweeping 270–360° panoramas from Mary’s Rock summit.
The route also passes the Pinnacles—an unusual Pedlar Formation granite outcrop that’s great for exploring and photos. Expect temperatures 8–12°F cooler than Charlottesville and windy conditions at the summit, so bring layers.
As a post-hike option, and for those that are interested, we can stop by Shotwell Brewing in Madison County for a refreshing beverage. This location also has a nice selection of food. And a back deck providing beautiful, rolling hills scenery.

Recommended Items: Broken-in Hiking Boots, Trekking Poles, Lunch/Snacks, 1-2 Liters of Water/Electrolytes, Good Day Pack, Tick Repellent, Layers of Clothing for potentially cooler Summer Weather, and any additional items you need for comfort and safety.
Shenandoah National Park (SNP) Pass: Bring your pass or purchase a day pass for $30.
Start Time: This hike will begin on time. Please note that cell service may not be available at the trailhead.
Weather Policy: This hike may be canceled or postponed the day before if inclement weather or hot/steamy conditions are forecasted. We’ll make the final decision by 7:00 a.m. on the morning of the hike and post updates in the comments. Steady rain with not much chance of clearing and/or dangerous conditions will call for postponing the hike.
