Hike the Deep River State Trail

Join the NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources for a year of celebrating North Carolina's 14 State Trails, with a hike on the Deep River State Trail! The trail follows its namesake river through the central Piedmont from Jamestown in Guilford County south and east through Randolph, Moore, Chatham and Lee counties before emptying into the Cape Fear River. It is one of just two State Trails with both a hiking and paddling component.

On this 3-mile hike sponsored by the Piedmont Land Conservancy and Randolph County, we will explore the land aspect of the trail, hiking from Franklinville downstream to Ramsuer. The 1.5-mile hike is on finely crushed gravel on an old rail bed paralelling the river. It penetrates a lush hardwood forest, passing an old grist mill and Deep River Fabricators, ending at the new Sandy Creek Bridge. On this guided hike you will learn the history of the railroad and the various mills along the way.

There is an optional 1-mile hike to Faith Rock overlooking the Deep (pictured).

This is considered easy. There is an optional 1-mile hike to Faith Rock, which is deemed moderate.
