GetHiking! 12 miles on the American Tobacco Trail

GetHiking! 12 miles on the American Tobacco Trail

Details

I never get that far when I walk the ATT because I have to turn around and go back to my car... So!!! Let’s walk 12 miles on the American Tobacco Trail.

The longest trail in the Triangle, stretching 22 miles from western Wake County north to downtown Durham. Since the whole trail is built on an old railroad bed it has quite flat and smooth terrain so 12 miles will fly by!

We will meet in Durham at C.M. Herndon Park, from there we will shuttle to the Apex trail head at 1309 New Hill-Olive Chapel Rd., Apex, NC 27502. And walk the 12 mile back to Durham.

The Wake County portion of the American Tobacco Trail is a recreational rail-trail open to walkers, runners, dog walkers, bicyclists and horseback riders. Environmental and cultural history programs are also offered. This rail-trail project spans 22 miles, from rural New Hill in western Wake County, through northeast Chatham County, to downtown Durham, near the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Currently, Wake County manages 6.5 miles, Chatham County has 4.7 miles, and Durham County has an 11.4-mile section

Along the trail, you can expect to see and enjoy a variety of wildlife, including beavers, great blue heron, red-tailed hawks, woodpeckers, a variety of songbirds, squirrels, owls, white-tailed deer and other animals.

This will be a long day and we will need some of you to drive the walkers back to their cars in Apex so if you are pressed for time consider this an option another time. We can work this out!!

Rain will cancel the event.
