Come enjoy the spring in SW Virginia as we hike a little over 34 miles of the AT southbound between the crossing at US 11/VA 683 in Rural Retreat, VA and the crossing at VA 603 at Fox Creek.
This hike will open to nine total participants. This hike will not be open to dogs or other pets.
Friday, April 1
We will meet at the Relax Inn in Troutdale, VA at 10:30am. Leaving at least one car at the Relax Inn, we will shuttle the rest of the crew to the AT crossing at Fox Creek on VA 603 about 4 miles west of Troutdale, VA. We will hike a little over 10 miles to the site of the former Raccoon Branch Shelter. If we have not reached the site by 6pm we will make a decision to press on or find the next available campsite.
Saturday, April 2
We will hike approximately 13 miles to the Partnership shelter.
Sunday, April 3
We will hike 11 miles back to the Relax Inn. Drivers will use the vehicle left there to retrieve the vehicles from the Fox Creek parking area.
Participants in this hike must have backpacking experience, be able to keep a good pace, and have the proper gear for the unpredictable temperature and climate conditions that can occur on the trail. Each crew member will be responsible for their own meals, water treatment, etc. or coordinate those with other crew members.
If interested a car pool will leave from the Harris Teeter on MLK Boulevard in Chapel Hill at 7:00am.
There will be a cost of $9 for each car left at the Relax Inn and we will split that cost among crew members. A suggested donation for carpool participants is $10 to $15.
