NOTE: Because of competition from a slew of National Trails Day events, we're postponing this hike until later in the month.
We're celebrating Mountains-to-Sea Trail (http://ncmst.org) Month with a series of Saturday hikes celebrating the statewide trail's new path from Raleigh to the coast, the Coastal Crescent route.
For our last hike, we'll visit the Howell Woods Environmental Learning Center, a 2,800-acre teaching outpost of Johnston Community College (http://www.johnstoncc.edu/howellwoods/). It's a curious marriage of pine savannah and coastal swamp, a spot where the Neuse River takes on mythic form, shapeshifting its way through a lowlands where bald cypress thrive. We'll hike about 5 miles here, then head down the MST to the Bentonville Battlefield (http://www.nchistoricsites.org/bentonvi/), where Confederate forces had their last hurrah, of sorts, before the end of the Civil War. We'll hike another 2-3 miles here.
More information will be posted on this hike soon, at the Great Outdoor Provision Co. web site (http://greatoutdoorprovision.com/).
