This one-day class will be held on Wednesday, July 13. Class will run from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.

This course is an introduction to the Linux command line interface (CLI). It is for students who have little or no previous exposure to Linux. Students will perform plenty of the practical tasks needed to work on the Linux command line, while also learning enough of the history and philosophy of Linux to understand why things are done as they are.

This class includes information about the following subjects:

• GNU Linux licensing
• Terminal emulators
• Shell Command line editing and auto-completion
• The home directory
• The Linux directory tree structure

It covers basic commands for:

• Viewing moving around and manipulating files and directories
• Managing files Standard Input / Output (STDIO)
• Searching files for strings
• Logical operations on the command line
• Viewing and managing processes
• File permissions and security
• Using shell historyAliasesTerminal customization

Your Teacher: David Both

David Both is an Open Source Software and Linux advocate who lives in Raleigh North Carolina. He is a strong proponent of and evangelist for the "Linux Philosophy."

David has been in the IT industry for over forty years and was a trainer for OS/2 and many other products for IBM where he worked for over 20 years. While at IBM he wrote the first training course for the original IBM PC in 1981. He has taught RHCE classes for Red Hat and has worked at MCI Worldcom, Cisco, and the State of North Carolina. He has been working with Linux and Open Source Software for nearly 20 years.

David has written articles for OS/2 Magazine, Linux Magazine, Linux Journal, and OpenSource.com. His article "Complete Kickstart," co-authored with a colleague at Cisco, was ranked 9th in the Linux Magazine Top Ten Best System Administration Articles list for 2008. David currently writes prolifically for OpenSource.com.

Your laptop. Note: A netbook or tablet is NOT a substitute. We have laptops available for loan if you don't have one. Just let us know at rdu@girldevelopit.com !

Refund Policy: Your payment of $20 guarantees your seat in the entire course. Please note that we cannot issue refunds, because there's an overhead to issuing refunds via Meetup.com and we already offer the workshops at such a low cost. We put proceeds into the chapter fund, which we use as our scholarship fund.
