Lean in Salon—Global Views on Chinese Women

Details

A famous Chinese proverb that says "women hold up half the sky" literally resonates with the ideas from a book “Lean In” by Sheryl Sandberg. Her theory could also explain the Chinese phenomenon of socalled "leftover women," a phrase coined to describe women who have successful careers but have difficulty finding suitable partners in life. Sandberg believes China's strong economic growth should be partly attributed to the high rate of female participation in the workforce, but how about the others, people from different countries, Chinese women cultivated by foreign culture? What do they think the typical Chinese women might be like and how do Chinese women tackle the anxieties and find practical answers to the problems facing women in both the workplace and family. Those are what weare going to discuss in this Salon.

In 2013, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg’s book Lean In encouraged women to “lean in" to their ambitions. In this book, the writer says the secret to break the stereotypes of men being aggressive, and women being nice, friendly, speaking when spoken to, putting their hands down and sitting on the side not the center, is to "lean in" and to feel comfortable about the fact that a woman can't be an almighty being that deals perfectly with everything she touches.

LeanIn.Org supports over 7,000 Circles of women “leaning in” around the world. Lean In Beijing, Lean In Shanghai, Lean In Guangzhou and Lean In Shenzhen have joined the Non-Profit Lean in Groups in exploring the challenges women face and working together to create a better world for everyoneFind us on Wechat by scanning the code:
