Let's go have fun in Moffat County Colorado! Choose from these unique activities to suit your fancy:
Friday, May 1 - Arrive at Elkhead Reservoir State Park, just a bit NE of Craig. Make your own reservations for May 1-3; choose Pronghorn Campground on the west side of the lake. Electric hookups and bathrooms but no drinking water or showers available. Enjoy hiking and riding trails, a big beautiful lake, and camping here for two nights. Yes, this is the Elkhead area that was the subject of the December book club book!
Saturday, May 2, 7:00 AM - Where the Hell's Maybell? 30-mile FREE road ride event starting in Craig and ending in Maybell. Shuttles available to bring us back.
Saturday, May 2, PM - Drive along Hwy 318 to see the Gates of Lodore on the Green River (1.5-mile hike to see the canyon). Continue driving NW on Hwy 318 to Browns Park National Wildlife Refuge for a 6-mile hike (https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/colorado/hoy-dike-and-two-bar-ranch-loop-trail) and birding. Bring binocs! This will be a lot of driving; some may choose to do something different this afternoon.
Saturday Group Dinner at the campground - Bring something to contribute to Campfire Nachos and BYOB.
Sunday, May 3 AM - Break camp--unless you're staying longer--and head to Maybell for the Great American Horse Drive. We'll watch as approximately 400 just-rounded-up ranch horses are pushed right through the middle of town. Food trucks, etc. available for this tiny town's biggest event of the year.
Sunday, May 3 PM - Gravel ride in Sand Wash Basin to view some of the approximately 500 wild horses there. Bring binocs! Variety of distances available on wide, smooth roads.
Sunday evening - Head back to Grand Junction, camp another night, or continue on with your own adventures.
