MTB Baxter Pass from Atchee Old Town Site
Details
Let’s meet at 9am at the Fruita welcome center right off interstate 70 on the south side. I can carry two passengers and their bikes. If we have more than two people sign up, they can follow me north on 4 Road to the old town site of Atchee. The road is fairly smooth and does not require high clearance. It is exactly 6 miles from the old railroad town site of Atchee, Colorado to the top of Baxter Pass, summit, 8,437’ giving us 2k of climbing. Temps look cool for Wednesday, May 27th with a high of 70 degrees. Bring a jacket, and something to eat on top of the pass.
- The Climb: Following the historic Uintah Railway grade, this 6-mile stretch features an intense and unrelenting climb (mostly at a 7.5% grade).
- Road Conditions: While the route was originally built for a narrow-gauge railway, it now serves as a rough, steep backcountry road. High-clearance four-wheel-drive (4WD) or ATV vehicles are highly recommended if driving, as conditions can be tricky and the dirt roads can easily become impassable during storms.
