A Borders salmon walk from Kelso: 25kms B+
Details
25kms moderate pace (5Kms/hr)
Country paths, tarmac, old railway, some rough riverbank and fences
Mostly level
Not suitable for dogs
A circular walk from Kelso that follows the course of the River Teviot with a focus on nature and Border history. The walk coincides with maximum salmon numbers in the river and will provide an opportunity for seeing them in the water if conditions are suitable. At Kalemouth there is a wall that can be climbed to a see a pod of salmon waiting to ascend the River Kale to spawn. However, they are only visible in low, clear water - perhaps a 20-40% chance of this. Polarising glasses very handy.
A brief tour of Kelso at the start, including views of Floors Castle, Kelso Abbey and the "Flemish" square, where there is a farmers market on the day of the walk. The walk will visit the remains of Roxburgh castle on the outward leg, a significant Borders stronghold. There are opportunities for refreshment stops, including the upmarket Roxburghe hotel at Sunlaws. Also on return to Kelso.
This walk is closer to Edinburgh than Glasgow - I recommend car sharing.
