The skills day will cover the following:
- Kit and equipment
- Understanding the Be Avalanche Aware process and developing an understanding of snow types and snowpack structure.
- Planning a winter hill walk, including weather and avalanche forecasting
- Snowcraft and Walking Skills – kicking steps in ascent and descent; selection and carriage of ice axe; cutting steps uphill and downhill; ice axe self-arrest; selection and fitting of crampons; movement up, down, and across slopes using crampons.
- Emergency Snow Shelters and caves.
- Winter Hazards – cornice, avalanche-prone slopes, hypothermia, frostbite, high winds, icy verglassed rock.
Kit and Equipment: Here's what you should bring:
- Crampons, ice axe and helmet can be provided by Aspen.
- Waterproof jacket and trousers
- Gaiters (to keep the snow out of your boots)
- Warm layers; thermal leggings, base layer, layers of fleece, back up duvet jacket.
- Hat, neck buff, balaclava, thin gloves, ski gloves, mittens
- Ski goggles and sun glasses and suncream
- Flask with hot drink
- Pack lunch
- Helmet (if you don't have one, Aspen will lend you one)
- Walking stick with snow basket (very useful)
- Map case and compass (Aspen will give you a map)
