Lairig Ghru Explorer (Rothiemurchus Approach) – Grade B+

Part of the Aviemore weekend, this is a brilliant Cairngorms walk heading into the northern reaches of the Lairig Ghru from the Rothiemurchus / Coylumbridge side.
We’ll meet at 9:00am outside Aviemore Youth Hostel, then car share to the start point (around 5 - 10 minutes drive). We’ll take as few cars as needed.
The walk begins on wide forest tracks through beautiful Caledonian pinewoods, before gradually opening out into the wider glen as we head towards the Lairig Ghru. As we gain a bit of height, the views really start to open up with that classic Cairngorms feel.
We’ll follow a loop variation on the return, so it’s not just a straight out-and-back.
Distance: ~18 km / 11.5 Miles
Total Ascent and Descent: ~600 m
Time: around 5-6 hours walking
Terrain:
- Good forest tracks to start (very muddy in places)
- Rougher, rockier sections further in
- Uneven ground and steady ascent
What to bring:
- Sturdy boots
- Waterproofs
- Warm layers
- Food, snacks, water
