Carrifran Wild Wood and White Coomb(821m) B+
Details
15km
800m ascent
A substantial circular hike in the Southern Uplands starting off in the newly restored Carrifran wild wood and ascending to Loch Skeen via the Corbett White Coomb.
The walk descends back to the valley via the 300ft Grey Mare's Tale waterfall (yes, another one).
The climb out of the Carrifran valley will be rough, following the Firthhope burn. There are stretches across moor along small hill paths. The return from Loch Skeen is on a well made path.
It will be necessary to park at least one car at the Grey Mare's Tail car park, for which there is a charge.
The restored forest is one of the most ambitious rewilding schemes in Scotland, aiming to reestablish the great Ettrick Forest that Robert the Bruce took refuge in. This is great place to see golden eagles since their release in Southern Scotland: there are now about 50 birds in the area. The wood itself was first planted 25 years ago and is beginning to achieve maturity.
