Event Description:
Join the Glasgow Branch of the Humanist Society Glasgow as we celebrate World Humanist Day with a talk and rare behind-the-scenes tour of Glasgow University’s Museum of Anatomy, guided by Professor Paul Rea and Ianto Jocks! Discover the dark but fascinating history of anatomy, the truth behind body donation myths (including Burke and Hare!) and explore the museum’s unique collection.

About the Speakers:
Professor Paul Rea
Professor Paul Rea is an internationally recognised leader in digital and anatomical education at the University of Glasgow. Trained in medicine and pathology, he now specialises in applying cutting-edge digital technologies—such as virtual and augmented reality—to medical education, simulation, and public engagement. As Director of Innovation, Engagement and Enterprise, he has pioneered initiatives like the MSc in Medical Visualisation and Human Anatomy and serves as Series Editor for the acclaimed Biomedical Visualization book series. A passionate educator and licensed Teacher of Anatomy, he is also an award-winning speaker with a global profile.

Dr Ianto Jocks
Dr Ianto Jocks is a Science Technician and Medical Historian at the University of Glasgow, based in the Anatomy Facility of the Thomson Building. With a unique background spanning chemistry, anatomy, and classical studies, his work bridges the sciences and humanities. His research focuses on the history of anatomy, surgery, and pharmaceuticals—particularly 19th and early 20th-century specimen collections and materia medica. Passionate about interdisciplinary collaboration, he is actively involved in technical skill-sharing, public engagement, and the integration of medical history into science education.

This event is open to all HSS members, supporters and anyone who shares humanist values.
