Directed by horror maestro Clive Barker (Hellraiser), Nightbreed (1990) is a wildly imaginative and visually spectacular horror fantasy that turns the conventions of the genre on their head. A troubled young man discovers Midian, a hidden underground world inhabited by a bizarre community of creatures who have been driven into hiding by humanity. But who are the real monsters? As the Los Angeles Times observed in its original review, Barker achieves something unusual in horror cinema by making us sympathise with the creatures rather than fear them. Packed with extraordinary make-up effects, grotesque imagery and a memorable performance from fellow horror director David Cronenberg, Nightbreed is an ambitious, strange and politically suggestive cult film about prejudice, persecution and the fear of those who are different.
