Hello all

This month's theme is "Terrifying Journey" - books with a strong horror (or dark fantasy) focus on a journey that could prove fatal to the unwary, or at least leave the survivor a gibbering wreck :D

So primarly books about going into the wilderness and finding out you are the teddy bear's picnic. However the "journey" could be less literal - a journey of self discovery of something horrifying, or surviving a period of time etc.

Some examples

  • The Terror, by Dan Simons (fictionalised version of doomed attempt by British sailors to chart Canada's Northwest Passage)
  • The Descent, by Jeff Kong (exploration of a newly discovered underworld)
  • The Ruins, by Scott Smith (a group of US tourists visit a forbidden temple in Yucatan rain forest)
  • The Hunger, by Alma Katsu (fictionalised telling of the Donner Party, a group of American Pioneers who got stuck in mountains over a harsh winter in 1846)

The above stick closely to the literal physical journey, but some of you may wish to go more metaphysical on the theme. For example, someone is currently reading The Last Graduate by Noami Novik. While it takes place in a monster infested wizard school, you could say trying to survive the semester is a terrifying journey through time.

I'll probably read Dan Simons' The Terror as its been on my reading list for years. I'd also like to check out the tv mini-series based on it afterwards if its on streaming.
