Hello all. For next themed reading, negotiation has failed, and we've chosen WAR.

This theme could cover both sci-fi or fantasy: books featuring epic sword & sorcery battles between good vs evil, or set in the grim darkness of the far future fought between fleets of spaceships.

The theme can also lean into horror, particularly if one side is a demonic invasion, or a horde of alien bugs that want your planet's bio-mass to feed the hive fleet.

Here's some examples to set the tone.

Example sci-fi

  • War of the Worlds, by HG Wells (1898)
  • Starship Troopers, by Robert Heinlein (1959)
  • On Basilisk Station, by David Weber (1993)
  • World War Z, by Max Brooks (2007)
  • Probably anything set to Warhammer 40k universe :D

Example Fantasy

  • Lord of the Rings, by JRR Tolkien (1954)
  • The Way of Kings, by Brandon Sanderson (2010)
  • The Poppy War, by RF Kuang (2018)

As always these are just examples I'm picking off good reads, you are free to read whatever you wish and tell us about it at the meeting.

I recently rewatched Star Ship Troopers and rather hoped to read book when I suggested the theme... alas the English-language version seems to be out of print and 2nd hand copies are super expensive :/
So after reading the long and depressing The Terror by Dan Simons last month, I may just lean heavily into pulp fiction this month and read an Alien vs Predator book :D
... Actually, what I should do is try to finish Wheel of Time again, I was half way through book 13 (of 14) last year when things distracted me, and The Final Battle is on the horizon. :p
