Water
Details
Hello all. I know what you are thinking, "water, really you couldn't have picked less generic theme?"
But yes, it's FANTASY month, but again we opted for a theme that's general enough for those who'd like to read SCI-FI or HORROR. Thus we went with H2O, because its everywhere.
So you are invited to read books about adventure on the high seas, water-based elemental magic; or perhaps sci-fi stories set on water-worlds (or perhaps desert worlds where water is the most important commodity), or, pick one of the many, many horror books out there featuring something unseen in the surf just waiting for you to step from the safety of the beach.
Here's some examples to set the tone.
Example fantasy
- A Wizard of Earthsea, by Ursula Le Giun (1968)
- Ship of Magic, by Robin Hobb (1998)
- On Stranger Tides, by Tim Powers (1987) (Pirates of the Caribbean 4 I believe is an adaption of this book, just with Jack Sparrow slotted in)
Example Sci-fi
- Dune, by Frank Herbert (1965)
- Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, by Jules Verne (1870)
Example Horror
- Meg, by Steve Alten (1997)
- Jaws, by Peter Benchley (1974)
- The Beast, by Peter Benchley (1991)
As always these are just examples I'm picking off good reads, you are free to read whatever you wish and tell us about it at the meeting.
I personalities don't need much excuse to read killer shark books, so I may read Jaws or The Meg again :D. But I'd like to reread Death Gate Cycle by Weis & Hickman, again. Book 4 of 7 has a water world, so may be excuse I've been needing to blast through half the series. Only issue, is while I loved series as a teen, I think when I last read at it as an adult I thought it hadn't dated well and didn't get past book 2. Well we'll see.
Oh, and theme has put me in mood of trying to find an old 90s cartoon called Pirates of Dark Water on streaming and bing some nostalgia - I loved that as a kid, but I'm not sure how well it's aged ๐
