Hello all, for August we've opted for books that feature the personification of Death.

The push for this theme seemed to be a few people wanting to read Discworld books ๐Ÿ˜†. However, could certainly fit into more serious fantasy or horror too if you wish to read a less comical approach to the grim reaper โ˜ ๏ธ

Here are some examples to set the mood, but as always you are free to read whatever you wish and tell us on day what you thought of it.

Examples

  • Reaper Man (1991) / Mort (1987), by Terry Pratchett
(I'm not a Discworld reader - but these are the two titles being talked up around the table)
  • Sandman, by Neil Gaiman (1989) (this is a comic series, but was recommended for those interested in graphic novels)
  • The Book Thief, by Murkus Zusak (2006)
(death is narrating the story of a little German girl living through WW2 - I read it long ago but can't recall anything about it ๐Ÿ˜œ, but it did release to critical acclaim)
  • On a Pale Horse, by Piers Anthony (1983)
(a man accidentally kills death, and has to take over the job - inspired the tv show Dead Like Me and was near top of several goodread lists of this theme)
  • Gods of Jade & Shadow, by Silvia Moreno-Garcia (2020)
(I know nothing of this book, but wanted a recently published example and a user review called it "a Cinderella story where the fairy godmother is the Mayan God of Death", which caught my attention out of the other 100 books listed on goodreads ๐Ÿ˜€)
