Just like a modern vehicle, we humans come with built-in sensors and warning systems. These systems protect us and keep us safe. However, our western culture, the pace of modern life and even past trauma can desensitize us to these messages, causing us to ignore the signs of our emotions and ultimately, to be surprised by powerful feelings that overwhelm us.
Emotions are the result of thoughts. The thought “someone is following me” leads to the emotions of anxiety and fear. But before the full emotion kicks in, we get a warning of what’s happening, because our bodies produce sensations. In the case of fear, it might be a knot in the stomach, a burst of energy that makes us want to run or fight, or the urge to scream. Or it could be something less recognizable: tears, shallow breathing, or something else.
For those with past trauma, feelings can escalate quickly and even provide false information to our situation. With a method called Heart Fluency, you can learn to recognize the sensations that lead to emotions and comfort yourself quickly and appropriately, so that you are not unnecessarily carried away from the present moment. You will be more focused, centered, and better able to take care of yourself in order to meet your goals.
