OPENING DOORS 4
Showcasing solutions to isolation and loneliness
Social isolation and loneliness pose a significant risk for health and longevity. Poor or insufficient social connection is associated with increased risk of heart disease, stroke, anxiety, depression, dementia and even susceptibility to infection. It can increase the risk of premature death as much as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. And loneliness can affect everyone: old, young, rich and poor. And you don’t have to be alone to be lonely, you can be very lonely in a crowd. It is often stigmatised and ignored. But left unaddressed loneliness is sadly a killer through it increasing the risk of both physical health and mental health problems including increasing the risk of suicide.
Opening Doors 4 is our fourth showcase event. It will be held at Sherwell United Church Hall on Wednesday 29th April from 10am to 4pm. It is free to attend with food available all day. It is open to anyone wanting to find out what is available for individuals and groups looking for opportunities to make friends, learn new skills, volunteer, find where to go for advice on many matters including support for mental health, dementia, cancer support, health and fitness and much more.
Increasing social connections can lead to a fulfilled and happy life with enhanced satisfaction, educational attainment and performance at work. It makes us feel that we matter.
Connected communities are healthier, safer and more prosperous.
We want as many people as possible to take advantage of what Plymouth has to offer.
