Recreating Our Futures
GlobalNet21 is a leading forum in the UK for discussing the major issues in the 21st Century. We share a common concern for the sustainability of both our planet and the people on it. With almost 20,000 network members in the UK and abroad, we are making the debate, and democracy, more accessible by enlarging the Public Square and using social networks.
As well as a network of individuals we have also set up a collaborative network of organisations to exchange good practice and transfer knowledge so that we can learn from each other. This network is cross boundary and includes local authorities, housing associations, universities, community groups and social enterprises. Our aim is through dialogue to celebrate diversity and develop community self-resilience and sustainability at a time of unprecedented social and environmental change.

Amy Casey is a project advisor at ReLondon which is a partnership of the Mayor of London and the London boroughs to improve waste and resource management and transform the city into a leading low carbon circular economy. Prior to ReLondon, Amy was a Project Manager for in the Waste Insights team at Keep Britain Tidy working alongside local authorities to drive down waste and increase recycling.
Rembrandt Koppelaar is a researcher who writes about the future of energy, materials, society, technology, and the circular economy. He has published two books and several articles on these topics, organised three academic conferences, and given more than a hundred lectures. He was previously a writer and editor for www.theoildrum.com which until its closure in 2013 was one of the best read energy blogs in existence with more than a million monthly visitors.
Jane Martin is the Chief Executive of City to Sea, an environmental organisation on a mission to stop plastic pollution. They work with communities, businesses, and everyday activists around the world to provide practical solutions to the plastic problem that makes our economy more circular.
Vera Vajda is the Climate Change Officer at Enfield Council and is a planner with a background in urban sustainability and a belief in community engagement. She will tell us about how the circular economy is developing in Enfield and the work she is doing on a tools library and repair cafe as well as other initiatives.
Our high consumption societies are based on a “take-make-dispose” mentality and that is making our future unsustainable as we press against planetary boundaries. Creating and developing a circular economy is one way of addressing our waste based economy. A circular economy is a model of production and consumption that aims to minimize waste and maximize the value of resources by keeping materials in use for as long as possible. This is what we will be discussing at this Forum with three interesting speakers
